Earth is our country

A series made in the Sahel, a region of Africa that is suffering greatly from global heating and Desertification.

Each image shares the same horizon, and looks to the ground. Suggesting that we look down at the soil that sustains us, rather than up to the sky for answers.

This work has been prompted by the realisation that the world may be approaching peak soil’, with by some counts, barely sixty harvests left.

“Why did we look up for blessing—instead of around, and down? What hope we have lies there. Not in the sky full of orbiting spy-eyes and weaponry, but in the Earth we have looked down upon. Not from above, but from below. Not in the light that blinds, but in the dark that nourishes, where human beings grow human souls”.
