Land of Little Rain

Photographs made at the JOYA in Almeria, a desertified region of southern Spain. JOYA is a climate positive artists residency set up by Simon and Donna in a previously abandoned farmhouse, the previous owners having left the land due to it becoming agriculturally unproductive.

The land around JOYA is home to sculptures that have been created by resident artists, which inspired my book ‘What if culture was nature all along?’.

JOYA has much to teach us about adaption and resilience in the presence of growing aridity in our world. By contemplating these damaged landscapes, we may be able to rethink our relationship with the non-human, and draw new maps for terrains of the future.
